Same Day Crown vs. Lab Created Crown Overall Costs

Same-day crowns and lab-created crowns have some similarities and some differences that are important to understand when choosing between these two popular options. This review discusses the differences, similarities, and costs for each option to help you decide which one is most appropriate according to your treatment needs and goals.

Same-day crown vs. lab-created crown: what are they and how much do they cost?

The following is everything that you need to know about same-day crowns and dental crowns that are created in a laboratory, along with an analysis of the cost for both options. This should help you determine the best solution according to your needs. However, it is still important to schedule a consultation with a dental professional to discuss the specifics of each option.

A same-day crown explained

A same-day dental crown, also called a CEREC crown, is a type of dental restoration that is created within the dentist's office with special technology (CAD/CAM design). The primary benefit of same-day crowns is that they only take a single dental visit to make, whereas the more traditional method involves multiple visits. However, they are only offered in the ceramic material, which is not as strong as alternative material options.

A lab-created crown explained

A lab-created dental crown is exactly how it sounds, which is a dental crown that is customized in a laboratory. The process works similar to a same-day crown in the sense that a dental impression is taken, which is used to personalize the restoration. However, the impression is sent to a lab for customization, rather than done in the office. There are multiple material options available for a lab-created crown.

Comparing the pros and cons of both crown options

There are two primary differences between same-day dental crowns and lab-created dental crowns, which are the time it takes to create them and the material options that are available. While a same-day crown is only available in the ceramic material, patients can choose a ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal, metal alloy, or gold crown when they have it customized in the lab rather than the dentist’s office. However, it can several weeks and multiple visits for a lab-created crown, whereas a same-day crown is completed on the first visit.

A cost analysis of same-day and lab-created crowns

The cost for a dental crown can vary for both same-day and lab-created crowns. On average, however, a same-day crown is more expensive than a lab-created crown, although there are a variety of factors that ultimately determine the price.
