How to Care For Invisalign Aligners

Invisalign® aligners offer a discreet and convenient alternative to traditional braces. These aligners allow individuals to straighten their teeth without the hassle of wires and brackets. However, as with traditional braces, it is important to properly care for them to ensure their effectiveness and longevity throughout your treatment. Here are some essential tips to help you keep your aligners in the best condition.

Regular cleaning and oral hygiene

Maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential not only for one's teeth but also for Invisalign aligners. Each time patients remove their aligners to eat or drink anything other than water, they should brush and floss their teeth before putting them back in. This prevents food particles and bacteria from getting trapped against their teeth and inside the aligners, reducing the risk of tooth decay and bad breath.

Rinse the aligners

After removing the aligners, give them a thorough rinse with lukewarm water. Do not use hot water, as it may warp the shape of the aligners. Rinsing helps remove saliva and plaque, which can lead to bacterial buildup and odors if left on the aligners for long periods of time.

Avoid specific foods and beverages

Invisalign aligners consist of clear plastic, making them a discreet treatment option. However, this also makes them susceptible to staining. To prevent discoloration, avoiding consuming foods and beverages that can stain teeth is best. These include the following:

  • Coffee
  • Tomatoes
  • Energy and sports drinks
  • Fruit drinks
  • Sodas
  • Soy sauce
  • Red wine
  • Berries

Even if people remove the Invisalign aligners before consuming food or beverages, it is beneficial to rinse the mouth out and clean the teeth before placing the aligners back in the mouth.

Store them properly

When not wearing the aligners, store them in their designated case. Leaving them out exposes them to dirt, bacteria, and the risk of damage or misplacement. Patients should carry their Invisalign case to ensure they have a safe place to store the aligners while eating or drinking.

Handle the aligners with care

When removing or inserting the aligners, be gentle with them. Use both hands and avoid excessive force, as too much pressure can lead to damage. It is also best to start at the back of one's mouth and work forward to prevent unnecessary stress on the aligner material.

Avoid hot environments

Exposing Invisalign aligners to high temperatures can lead to warping or distortion of the plastic. Avoid leaving them in direct sunlight, hot cars, or near heat sources. If a person's aligners become misshapen, they should consult their dentist on how to proceed and get a new set of aligners.

Do not skip wear time

It is important to be consistent during Invisalign treatment. Make sure to wear the aligners for the recommended amount of time each day, typically 20 to 22 hours. Skipping or prolonging wear time can extend the duration of treatment and affect the final results.
